Engineering Week (FEBRUARY 18-24, 2018)
The purpose of engineering week is to emphasis the contributions engineers have made to improve society and the importance of fields in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). To take part in this national event, the AOE officers went down to the cafeteria and challenged students to complete two activities for the week.
In the first activity, students were given pre-cut sheets of aluminum foil and tasked with designing and constructing boats that could not only float on water but also support additional loads (in the form of pennies). Although designing a floating boat was fairly simple, the difficulty increased as more and more pennies were added. The purpose of this activity was to demonstrate to students the importance of creativity and to show the pros/cons of different designs.
In the second activity, students were given the opportunity to compete in a beanbag toss and attempt to make shots into a goal. While it was fairly straightforward, students had to take into account the physics behind making a successful toss.
